Knotted & Corded
The endless knot has no beginning and no end, and stands for the fact that nothing stands alone. Red cord is worn for protection and traditionally left on until it falls off by itself.
And on a mala, the knot between each bead is not decoration. It gives the thumb a stop, keeps the stones from grinding, and means a broken cord costs you one bead rather than a hundred and eight.
