The shape on this pendant started life as a back scratcher.
如意 means as you wish, and the object was named for doing exactly that. It began as a 爪杖, a long handled scratcher with a curved head, and it got its name because it reaches the one place you cannot reach yourself. Scholars kept them on the desk. Monks used them to hold notes during a talk. Then the emperors got hold of the idea, the handle grew jade and gold, the head kept the curl, and the scratcher became the sceptre you see in every Qing court portrait.
The head is the part that survived, and it is the shape you are wearing. That curled cloud outline is the business end of the original tool, which is why the same silhouette turns up on furniture corners, door handles, temple eaves and the backs of chairs. When a Chinese object curls like this, it is saying the same thing: may it go the way you want it to.
For anyone in the middle of something they cannot control. A wait for results, a visa, a house sale, a diagnosis. It is the traditional Chinese gift for exactly that, because the wish is not for wealth or protection but simply for it to turn out the way the person wants. That also makes it an easy present when you do not know what someone needs, which is more than most amulets can claim.
The cord is braided and adjusts with a sliding knot, so it sits where you want it. Jade is traditionally kept on and not put away. Jadeite is tough but still stone, so take it off before anything with knocks in it, and a soft dry cloth is all it needs.

Every necklace lists its chain or cord length in the Specifications. As a guide, 45 cm sits on the collarbone and 60 cm on the upper chest. The Length Guide above the Add to cart button shows both.
When the Specifications say natural jadeite, jade, agate, chalcedony or obsidian, that is what it is. The exact material of every piece is named there, including the metal and any plating.
Close, but not identical. Natural stone differs in colour and marking from piece to piece, and hand carving varies a little too.
Yes. Stainless steel can be worn in water. Jade and other stone can stay on through the day, but take it off before sport or anything involving impact. Keep enamel and plated pieces away from water, perfume and abrasion.
