The belly is not a joke about eating.

It is half of a couplet that hangs over the Maitreya hall in most Chinese temples. 大肚能容, the big belly can hold what the world finds hard to hold. The other half is about the face: 開口便笑, the open mouth laughs at what the world finds laughable. That is the whole of Budai, and it is why he turns up in shops, cars and living rooms rather than only in temples.

These are the cute baby version. Same laugh, same belly, same long ears, but a toddler, robe slipping off his shoulders and bare feet underneath. Four poses, and the robe colour tells you which is which:

  • Standing, blue robe, holding it open
  • Sitting, coral robe, both arms flung up
  • Laying, purple robe, propped on one elbow
  • Thinking, green robe, hand beside his cheek

All four are the same unglazed purple clay, so the skin is matte and faintly sandy, and the colour is the material rather than paint sitting on top of it. Rubbing the belly for luck is a real custom rather than a tourist invention, and the belly on all four is left bare and smooth.

He goes almost anywhere. On an altar next to the more serious figures, on a desk where you will see him during the working day, on a bookshelf, a windowsill, a car dashboard, or set into a plant pot. He is small and he is not solemn, so he does not need a formal setting to look right.

He also works as a tea pet, which is the one use worth explaining. The Chinese for keeping one is 養, to raise: you pour the rinse water and the last of the pot over him while you drink, session after session, and unglazed clay slowly takes up a sheen from the tea. It takes months. One raised for a year looks nothing like one out of the box, and the difference is down entirely to whoever owned it. Completely optional. He looks right dry.

For anyone who wants a Buddha that is not solemn. Small enough to sit in a cupped palm.

Taking Care

A dry brush for dust is usually enough. If you rinse him, hot water and a soft brush only, never soap or detergent, which unglazed clay absorbs and holds on to. Keep him out of direct sun, which fades the robe colour. If you are raising him with tea, use the tea you actually drink and let him dry between sessions.

Where To Use It?

All of our statues are handcrafted to bring mindfulness and peace into your home. Display each piece in a space where it resonates with you—a shelf, entryway, desk or meditation corner, and let it become a focal point for calm and reflection.

Meticulously Handcrafted

Each statue and figurine is handcrafted with meticulous care. Our artisans pour passion into every detail, creating pieces that bring spiritual beauty and craftsmanship into your home.

A Story in Every Piece

Every figure here means something. The laughing Buddha stands for contentment, the guardian lions watch a doorway, and the novice monk is the beginner still learning. We share the story behind each piece and where it traditionally belongs, so it arrives as more than decoration.

Frequently asked questions

What if my statue arrives damaged?

Send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we will replace it or refund you. Every piece is wrapped and boxed in protective packaging before it leaves us.

How big is it?

Check the Specifications on this page for measurements in centimetres and inches. Most of our statues are desk and shelf sized, between 10 and 20 cm tall. Each one is finished by hand, so allow 1 to 2 cm of variation.

Will the colour match the photos?

Closely, but not exactly. Clay and stone are natural materials and every statue is finished by hand, so tone and texture vary a little from piece to piece.

Can I keep it outdoors?

We recommend indoors. Unglazed clay can fade in direct sun, and sandstone is porous, so rain and soil will mark it. If you do place one outside, choose a sheltered spot away from sun and rain.

How do I clean it?

Dust it with a soft dry cloth or brush. Avoid soap and soaking, which unglazed clay absorbs. Glazed pieces can be wiped with a damp cloth.
