The Buddha people recite to when somebody is ill is made of this stone.

藥師琉璃光如來, the Medicine Buddha, translates as Medicine Master of Lapis Lazuli Light. The sutra describes his body as lapis the whole way through, clear inside and out, and his pure land as a country built of the same blue. He is the figure turned to over an illness, a recovery, a diagnosis that has just landed. So the blue running down this strand is not there because blue is restful. It is his light, and that is what the name means.

The guru bead is clear quartz, and you can see the cord running through it. Every other mala here finishes on a stone you cannot see into. On this one the light goes straight through the bead your round ends on, which is as close as a string of beads gets to a body described as clear inside and out.

Most of the strand is lapis, deep blue with gold flecks through it and the occasional white streak. The gold is not added. It is pyrite, which grows inside lapis while the stone forms, and a lapis bead with no gold in it anywhere has usually been dyed to get there. It is the quickest way to tell the real thing from the reconstituted powder that most cheap lapis actually is.

After the lapis the blue runs shallow and turns. Turquoise, pale blue chalcedony, green aventurine, and the teal stone with dark veining called phoenix stone. It usually means chrysocolla, and the dark webbing running through it is the rock it grew in, not a crack and not a flaw.

Two black onyx beads sit where the blue ends. Marker beads exist so your thumb can find its place on a strand without you looking down or counting back. On this one they fall right where the colour turns, so you feel the change and see it in the same moment.

A matching bracelet is included free, in four sizes. Same stones and the same run of colour, small enough to wear to work without explaining it. Worth measuring your wrist before you order.

For anyone recovering, and for anyone sitting with someone who is. This is the strand people reach for during an illness, which is a different reason from wanting to feel calm.

Wearing & Using It

Left hand, one bead per breath or per recitation, thumb drawing each one toward you. When you reach the guru bead the round is finished, so turn the strand and go back rather than crossing it. If you are only wearing it, none of that applies. There is no metal anywhere on it, no clasp and no spacers, so there is nothing on it to react against skin.

One Bead, One Breath

A mala is a strand for counting. One bead for each breath or each recitation, 108 to a round, and a guru bead to tell your thumb the round is done. The rest of the day it wraps at the wrist or goes over the head.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a mala have 108 beads?

Buddhism counts 108 afflictions, and a mala gives you one bead for each. The guru bead sits outside the count: when your thumb reaches it, the round is done.

Can I wear it, or is it only for meditation?

Both. It is long enough to go over the head or wrap at the wrist. If you are only wearing it, none of the counting applies.

Are the stones real?

Yes. Every stone on the strand is genuine natural stone, never glass or resin. They are listed under Details on this page.

Will mine look exactly like the photos?

Close, but never identical. Natural stone varies in colour and marking from bead to bead, so no two strands match.

What if I do not like it?

Send it back within 30 days of delivery.
