Plum blossom opens in the snow, before the leaves, before anything else.
That is the whole reason it matters in Chinese art. It flowers at the coldest point of the year, on bare black branches, when nothing else is prepared to. It is one of the Three Friends of Winter alongside pine and bamboo, and what the three have in common is that they do not give up in the cold.
