Before it was a money charm, this animal went at the front of an army.
The Book of Rites, the old Chinese manual of how things were properly done, has a rule for troops on the march: when there are fierce beasts on the road ahead, raise the pixiu. Its image went up at the head of the column, and in classical writing 貔貅 became a plain word for soldiers you would not want to meet. Most people now know it as the creature that swallows gold and never gives it back. That job came later. The first one was going in ahead of you.
That is the protection this one is worn for. Not the quiet kind that keeps bad luck off in general. The kind you want when you already know what is waiting: a dispute, a hearing, a hostile meeting, a workplace you have to walk back into on Monday. The mouth is open and the teeth are showing because it is not there to calm anything down. It is there so that whatever is ahead meets something fiercer first.
Jade is the half that stands between. Chinese families give jade to be worn against the skin and kept on, and the belief that goes with it is simple: if your jade ever cracks, it took a blow that was meant for you. A broken piece is traditionally wrapped in red cloth and put away, not thrown out. Paired with a guardian animal it makes one object with two jobs, one that goes in front and one that takes what gets through.
For anyone with something hard in front of them. A court date, a contract fight, a difficult return to work, a move to a city where they know nobody. It is one of the easier jade pieces to give a man, because a snarling winged animal needs no explaining and does not read as jewellery. Give it before the thing happens, not after: a son leaving home, a partner heading into a rough quarter, a friend in the middle of a divorce. The message is that they are not walking in alone.

Every figure here means something. The laughing Buddha stands for contentment, the guardian lions watch a doorway, and the novice monk is the beginner still learning. We share the story behind each piece and where it traditionally belongs, so it arrives as more than decoration.
Every statue is wrapped and boxed to travel. If yours arrives damaged, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we will replace it or refund you. Not right for your space? Return it within 30 days.

Check the Specifications on this page for measurements in centimetres and inches. Most of our statues are desk and shelf sized, between 10 and 20 cm tall. Each one is finished by hand, so allow 1 to 2 cm of variation.
Closely, but not exactly. Clay and stone are natural materials and every statue is finished by hand, so tone and texture vary a little from piece to piece.
We recommend indoors. Unglazed clay can fade in direct sun, and sandstone is porous, so rain and soil will mark it. If you do place one outside, choose a sheltered spot away from sun and rain.
Dust it with a soft dry cloth or brush. Avoid soap and soaking, which unglazed clay absorbs. Glazed pieces can be wiped with a damp cloth.
