Cloisonne Red Agate Peace Bracelet

The gold tag on this bracelet says 平安. Two characters, píng'ān, and between them they carry most of Chinese well-wishing: safe and well, unharmed, nothing went wrong. It is what you say to someone getting on a plane. It is what a parent writes to a child who has moved away. It is what hangs from the rear-view mirror in a lot of cars. Having it stamped onto the piece turns the whole bracelet into a sentence, and the sentence is come back in one piece.

The barrel is cloisonné, which is a genuinely slow way to decorate metal. The Chinese name is 景泰藍, jǐngtàilán, after the Jingtai years of the Ming dynasty when the technique hit its peak. Thin brass wires are bent into the outline of the pattern and fixed to the body, leaving a grid of small walled cells. Every cell is then packed by hand with coloured enamel paste and fired, and because enamel sinks as it melts, the packing and firing have to be repeated before the surface is ground flat and gilded. The red and green petals on this one are that whole process at the scale of a thumbnail.

Red agate sits underneath it, and in China red is never a neutral choice. It is the colour on doors at new year, on wedding envelopes, on the packet handed to a child, and the reasoning behind all of it is the same: red keeps the wrong things out. That is the same job the tag is doing, said in a different language, which is why the two sit together instead of competing. Held up to the light these beads go translucent, closer to cherry than to brick, and the thinner ones you can see straight through.

What the barrel is not is a working prayer wheel. It is openwork, so you can see right through the sides, and there is nothing rolled up inside it. A real prayer wheel is sealed around a scroll, and this is a decorated bead built in that shape. If the reason you are here is the mechanism rather than the enamel work, this is not the piece.

For anyone leaving. Someone moving to another city, a new driver, a child going off to university, anyone starting a long commute, anyone going in for something they have been quiet about. 平安 is what you give when you cannot go with them, and it is one of the few Chinese blessings that needs no explaining once it is translated. It reads correctly as a send-off present, it reads correctly at new year, and it is small enough on the wrist to be worn by someone who does not otherwise wear anything.
