Anyone can be calm sitting down.
The hard part starts when you stand up. The inbox, the school run, the person who needs an answer right now. What gets called a calm person is mostly somebody who can carry the quiet from the chair to the front door, and that is what these two little monks are about. One is sitting with it. The other has got to his feet and still has it, and his raised palm is a monk's greeting, the one-handed kind, given standing and in passing.
行亦禪,坐亦禪. Walking is Zen, sitting is Zen. It is a line from a Tang dynasty Chan poem, and its point is blunt: calm that only works while you are sitting is not finished yet. The sitting is practice. The rest of the day is the test.
So choose by where you lose it. If your trouble is stopping at all, take the seated monk and put him where you would sit if you ever let yourself: by the bed, beside the reading chair, in the corner you keep meaning to use. If you can find calm and it is gone by nine in the morning, take the standing monk and put him where the day comes at you: the desk, the hallway shelf, the kitchen counter. The pair is for most of us, who need both.
The wooden mala comes with him. Leave it draped over the figure, or lift it off and put it in your pocket on the way out. It is the one part of this you can take with you when you stand up, which is the whole idea.
For anyone who is calm until the day starts. People who meditate in the morning and are short with someone by lunch. Parents, carers, anyone whose work is other people's emergencies. It is a kind thing to give somebody starting a demanding job, coming back to work after time away, or heading into exam season, because it says keep your head without anyone having to say it out loud. Any stretch where life is about to get louder is the right time for it.

Every figure here means something. The laughing Buddha stands for contentment, the guardian lions watch a doorway, and the novice monk is the beginner still learning. We share the story behind each piece and where it traditionally belongs, so it arrives as more than decoration.
Every statue is wrapped and boxed to travel. If yours arrives damaged, send us a photo within 7 days of delivery and we will replace it or refund you. Not right for your space? Return it within 30 days.

Check the Specifications on this page for measurements in centimetres and inches. Most of our statues are desk and shelf sized, between 10 and 20 cm tall. Each one is finished by hand, so allow 1 to 2 cm of variation.
Closely, but not exactly. Clay and stone are natural materials and every statue is finished by hand, so tone and texture vary a little from piece to piece.
We recommend indoors. Unglazed clay can fade in direct sun, and sandstone is porous, so rain and soil will mark it. If you do place one outside, choose a sheltered spot away from sun and rain.
Dust it with a soft dry cloth or brush. Avoid soap and soaking, which unglazed clay absorbs. Glazed pieces can be wiped with a damp cloth.
