Coiled tight into an S, hornless, more serpent than beast, with the body worked in raised comma-shaped spirals. \u003cstrong\u003eArchaeologists use exactly those features to date jade pendants from the period.\u003c\/strong\u003e It is one of the most recognisable forms in Chinese art and it looks nothing like the fierce whiskered dragons that came later.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe creature is a jiao (蛟), a water dragon without horns.
