gold-mantra-barrel-necklace
Gold Mantra Barrel Necklace

A prayer wheel does not count what you say. It counts what is inside it.

The mechanic is specific and slightly startling the first time somebody explains it. A wheel is packed with the mantra written out thousands of times on a tight roll of paper, and one turn is held to be worth every copy sealed in there. So the merit does not come from your effort. It comes from the volume of text you are carrying.

Which is why monasteries line whole walls with them and why people walking past give each one a push without breaking stride.

The barrel here is the wearable form of that shape, with om mani padme hum running around the outside in Tibetan script. Six syllables, the most repeated words in Tibetan Buddhism.

For anyone with a practice that keeps losing to the rest of the day. The whole appeal of this object is that it does not require you to remember anything.

Gold tone against a fine chain, short enough to sit at the collarbone.

Wearing it

It hangs vertically and swings freely, so the script faces different ways as you move. Plated finishes wear where they rub, so keep it off abrasive surfaces and clean it with a dry cloth.

A good first Tibetan piece, because it carries the words and asks nothing of you beyond putting it on.

Specifications

Material: Gold-tone plated base metal

Inscription: Om mani padme hum in Tibetan script

Chain: 45cm

Note: Plated finish, avoid abrasion
