Thin brass wires are bent into the outline of the pattern and fixed to the body, leaving a grid of small walled cells. Every cell is then packed by hand with coloured enamel paste and fired, and because enamel sinks as it melts, the packing and firing have to be repeated before the surface is ground flat and gilded. The red and green petals on this one are that whole process at the scale of a thumbnail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRed agate sits underneath it, and in China red is never a neutral choice.\u003c\/strong\u003e It is the colour on doors at new year, on wedding envelopes, on the packet handed to a child, and the reasoning behind all of it is the same: red keeps the wrong things out.
